What is Your Next Step?
Achieving goals - academic, professional or personal - often requires moving forward before all the steps are clear. Having experienced this sometimes daunting process both first-hand and alongside clients from a wide range of backgrounds, Gordy Steil understands the value of dialogue and collaboration. His goal is to help you bring your goals to life, and to see them through, with a motivational mixture of curiosity, excitement and commitment.
With over 20 years of experience as an educator, counselor and mentor - easily 10,000 hours with individuals and with groups ranging upwards of 50 students - Gordy Steil is an accredited professional with a proven and consistent track record of helping clients not just to achieve goals but to feel supported and confident as they pursue them.

Gordy has been working in test prep for over two decades. At the Princeton Review, he has been trained and certified as an SAT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT, and recently as an MCAT PsychSoc teacher, and he has worked with at least 1,000 students in that capacity to improve their test scores.
He has also worked for private after-school and weekend/summer programs, as well as non-profit groups such as Upward Bound and local charter schools, where he has taught, tutored, and developed curricula for CAHSEE, SAT/ACT, and college essay prep classes.
Beyond test prep, Gordy has continued to hone his skills as a writing coach, helping students to gain admission to programs ranging from undergraduate art schools, to the Ivy League, to top-tier graduate programs in business, law, medicine, and other fields.
Throughout high school and college, Gordy tutored math (and sometimes physics) with clients ranging from beginners (as young as first-graders) to advanced students of calculus and statistics.
Since moving to California in 1998, Gordy has completed two Master’s Degrees, in Education (Language, Literacy, and Culture) at UC Berkeley (M.A. ’04), and in Counseling Psychology at the Wright Institute (also in Berkeley; M.A. ’13). He has accumulated extensive tutoring and teaching experience with English language learners, student athletes, low-income communities and communities of color, and students with learning disabilities.
He continues to teach and tutor, with students across the age and preparedness spectrum, as they prepare to enter college; medical, business, law, and dental school; and graduate programs across the sciences, social sciences, and humanities.
Gordy’s passions clearly lie in education, human development, and career development. He appreciates every opportunity to work with people who are focused on moving forward in their lives, whether that be in school, work, relationships, or their own well-being.
Gordy is currently a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in private practice (CA Board of Behavioral Sciences license # 109805).
From 2015-2018 he worked as a Staff Therapist at The Psychotherapy Institute in Berkeley, a low-fee community mental health clinic specializing in long-term "psychodynamic" psychotherapy that has served the Bay Area since 1972. Through TPI's intensive training program, which included 10-15 hours of clinical supervision and training per week, he further developed his expertise in the treatment of moderate to severe anxiety, depressive and other common "disorders" in his work with adolescents, adults and couples representing a diverse range of racial, ethnic, socioeconomic and gender/sexual backgrounds and identities.
From 2013-2015, after completing the M.A./MFT Program at the Wright Institute, Gordy served as a Day Treatment Therapist at Thunder Road in Oakland, a residential treatment center for dual-diagnosed adolescents. As a practicum trainee, and continuing as an Intern, Gordy worked for 18 months with adolescents and their families in individual, family, group and multi-family group settings. Alongside the program requirements, he helped clients to define new goals and approaches to life and to identify and access the personal, interpersonal and community resources necessary for sticking to them.
He continues his work with adolescents as a volunteer counselor at College Track Oakland.
